The gap

Start with a real problem students care about — understanding follows from genuine doing

Dewey's framework rests on two interlocking principles from 'Experience and Education' (1938): Continuity — each experience must connect meaningfully to what the learner already knows and cares about — and Interaction — the learner must actively engage with a real environment, not passively receive content. These principles are made operational through the Reflective Thinking sequence from 'How We Think': (1) Felt Difficulty — the learner encounters a genuine problem or obstacle; (2) Problem Definition — the difficulty is clarified and bounded; (3) Hypothesis — possible explanations or solutions are generated; (4) Reasoning — implications of each hypothesis are worked through; (5) Testing — the hypothesis is tried against real experience. Curriculum design should always begin with the child's existing interests and expand outward to subject matter, so academic content arrives as the answer to a question learners are already asking.

The problem

Traditional schooling treats students as vessels to be filled with facts — disconnected content delivered through passive reception and measured by recall. Dewey called this 'the wrong psychology': it mistakes familiarity with information for genuine understanding. The result is knowledge that cannot transfer, students who cannot think through novel problems, and learning that ends when the textbook closes.

A teacher assigns textbook chapters 7–9 on the American Revolution, lectures on the key causes and battles, and administers a quiz where students match dates to events. Students score reasonably well but cannot explain why the colonists revolted when asked two weeks later. The knowledge was stored temporarily but never connected to anything students understood or cared about — and so it dissolved.

Students begin by debating a real injustice: a school fee they had no voice in. They generate theories about what makes authority legitimate. They test those theories against primary sources from the colonial period, discovering that colonists were asking the same questions about the same power imbalance. They produce a 'Petition for Redress' applying colonial precedent to their own situation. Three months later, they still explain the Boston Tea Party — because they understand what it meant, and why it mattered to people who felt exactly as they did.

Good diagnosis — that's our starting point. Now let's apply the Reflective Thinking Sequence to redesign this. Phase 1 is Felt Difficulty: students need to encounter a real problem or injustice, not an abstract historical event. What do your 8th graders already feel strongly about? Unfair rules they had no say in? Being required to pay for something without being consulted?
Actually — the school added a mandatory activity fee this year and students had zero input. They were genuinely angry about it.
That's your felt difficulty, and it's powerful because it's real. Here's how the full sequence builds from there: Phase 1 (Felt Difficulty) — the activity fee. Students are living taxation without representation right now. Phase 2 (Problem Definition) — what makes a tax unjust? When does a governing body have legitimate authority to impose costs without consent? Phase 3 (Hypothesis) — students generate theories: consent, representation, proportionality, due process. Phase 4 (Reasoning) — they test those theories against the historical record. Did colonists have representation? Was there a legitimate grievance process? Phase 5 (Testing) — a mock case: was the colonial response justified? Is the school's fee justified by the same standards? The Revolution stops being a story that happened and becomes a framework for thinking about power and legitimacy — a question they're already living.
That's a completely different unit. They'd actually have a reason to care about the historical details because the details answer a question they already have.
